Inspired by the simplicity and ecology of Northern Mexican haciendas, this property favors natural elegance over fancy decoration. The home utilizes simple, locally made materials with natural colors drawn from the countryside and the city of San Miguel de Allende. The entire estate exemplifies the incredible craftsmanship, skills, and artisanship of the people of San Miguel.
The Main House is thoughtfully divided into three wings connected by one long corridor. It features a timeless design that requires zero maintenance on the floors, walls, or exterior.
Construction: All outside walls are constructed from locally-sourced adobe bricks, set to create very thick walls. All interior walls are finished with polished concrete. A special pigment is permanently incorporated into the polished concrete exterior walls for perpetual outdoor surfaces.
Living and Entertainment Spaces: A spectacular Salón and Gallery serve as the main entrance, which seats 50 or more guests and includes a small stage for events. The dining and living rooms feature beautiful hand-painted and stenciled clay-tile ceilings with hummingbird and swallow patterns created by the owners.
Professional Kitchen: The kitchen features a classic Boveda ceiling, three deep sinks, two dishwashers, and sealed polished concrete countertops. A half kitchen island can be lowered specifically for wheelchair use.
Primary Suite Wing: The main bedroom features a completely separate living area with its own private patio, a Juliet balcony, and two fireplaces. It also includes a private patio equipped with a very large custom cantera stone tub and an outdoor shower.
Guest Accommodations: The main floor guest bedroom features Juliet balconies, beautiful garden views, and a large bathroom with an open shower and a deep soaking tub designed for two. Downstairs you’ll find 2 more guest bedroom that act a separate 2-bedroom apartment equipped with a full kitchen and separate access if desired.
The 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom Guest House is attached to the Main House via classic clay tile-covered corridors and porches.
Artisan Finishes: The kitchen features custom tiles created specifically for the house by Guanajuato maestro artisan Gorky González, showcasing a unique hummingbird design
Amenities: The kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher and a Mexican ‘San-Son’ professional stove featuring four large gas burners and a gas oven.
Suites: One large bedroom features a fully accessible en suite bathroom with orchard and garden views, while the second bedroom includes a walk-in closet and an adjacent bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers.
Grounds, Gardens, and Ecology
Both homes are surrounded by beautiful gardens, winding pathways, and mature trees.
Homesteading Features: The property includes a large greenhouse with polycarbonate insulating panels, an enclosed large chicken coop with an outside-access nest box, and extensive raised-bed vegetable gardens.
Orchards and Flora: The grounds feature a citrus orchard with lemons, limes, grapefruit, and mandarins, alongside several pomegranate trees. A front cactus garden contains over 300 “nopales” (prickly pear cacti), grown for their edible paddles and delicious “tuna” fruits.
The Pond: A natural pond is home to approximately 30 large koi and features both Mexican and tropical water lilies. The water is naturally cleaned and aerated by being pumped slightly uphill through a natural bog filter.
Outdoor Entertainment
Dining and Kiosks: A large vine-covered outdoor kiosk comfortably seats 28 people for dinner parties and is located adjacent to an outdoor kitchen and covered grill area. Three bathrooms are conveniently located in the kiosk area for outdoor parties.
Event Plaza: A massive 12m x 22m (39 ft x 66 ft) brick outdoor plaza can accommodate open-air parties or tents for up to 200 people.
Integrated Systems
Water: The home utilizes a large cistern fed by a community deep-water well, with backup Tinacos on the roofs of both houses. A grey water cistern collects roof runoff for watering outdoor plants, and reverse osmosis systems are installed under the sinks in both kitchens and the main house bathrooms.
Power and Connectivity: The property features whole-house surge protectors, three electrical meters to control costs, and TELMEX fiber-optic internet. Ethernet/Cat5 connections run throughout the Main House.
